A man has been shot dead by police after a stand-off at Sydney’s Central Station in Australia.

Police were called to reports of a robbery at the station just before 6.45pm on Wednesday.

Witnesses said a man armed with scissors confronted the owner of a florists and refused to put them down when officers arrived at the scene.

He was then shot several times at close range. An image posted by SBS News journalist Andrea Booth showed police crowding over him to give first aid.

A police spokeswoman said the man died at the scene and a “critical incident investigation” would now take place.

Markell Brownscombe, 27, said he saw a plain clothes officer and two uniformed officers pointing their guns at the man and yelling at him to put down the scissors.

He told the Sydney Morning Herald: “There was three gunshots then it was over. No one sort of screamed and freaked out.

“A lot of people were in disbelief.”
