A Chinese man paid for 5,000 bowls of spicy noodles to say thank you to a restaurant for recovering his lost engagement ring.

The man, identified as Mr Wang by the Chongqing Morning Post, had planned to surprise his girlfriend by proposing on their one-year anniversary.

He spent the morning of August 13 preparing for the engagement but while having his lunch he moved away from his seat to take a call from his girlfriend in case she spotted him, according to the newspaper.

Mr Wang returned to find his bag, containing the three-carat diamond engagement ring worth 300,000 yuan (£35,000), had gone.

But a customer who found the bag handed it into the restaurant manager Yue Xiaohua, who gave it back to Mr Wang.

A grafteful Mr Wang returned to the restaurant “unexpectedly” the next day and gave the manager 35,000 yuan (£4,000) for 5,000 bowls of spicy noodles and told him to invite “everyone to eat for free for the day”.

He had asked the restaurant manager how many bowls of spicy noodles they normally sold in a day.

Huge queues formed outside the shop in Chongqing for the free food.

Mr Wang also handed a “thank you” letter to the restaurant which said his girlfriend had accepted the engagement, according to the South China Morning Post.
