Police have launched a manhunt after a 78-year-old woman was punched in the face while buying a newspaper in south east London.

The victim was brutally attacked as she leaned round the suspect to pick up a paper at Plum Local Express, in Plumstead High Street.

As she leaned past the attacker he punched her in the face, police said.

The pensioner was taken to hospital to be treated for bruising and has since been discharged following the attack in April.

Scotland Yard today released a CCTV image of the suspect who is described as black and around 50 to 60 years old.

He has a shaved head and was wearing a black leather jacket at the time of the attack.

Detective Constable Mark Day, the officer in the case, said: “This attack has left the victim in shock and in fear of going out in public by herself. She no longer uses the store in fear that she will meet the suspect again.

“I am appealing for anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV image to contact us and assist our investigation.”

Any witnesses, or anyone with any information, can contact DC Day at Greenwich CID via 101, or via Twitter @MetCC.
