A London professor who died this weekend after a crash near Windsor is being remembered by friends as a great neighbour and family man who loved everything from cars to fine cuisine.

Mark Landis, a 39-year-old father of three, died in hospital after a two-vehicle crash east of Leamington on Aug. 5. A friend says Landis was travelling with his wife and kids at the time. Ontario Provincial Police have reported that a Toyota van collided with a transport truck near County roads 34 and 37.

Landis died in a Windsor hospital Aug. 11, six days after the crash. His obituary said he was an organ donor. Friends say Landis’s wife, Beth, and his three children, Matthew, Rhys and Remy, are still in hospital.

Landis was an assistant professor of medicine and radiology at Western University and a chest radiologist at Victoria Hospital in London. His obituary said he is a skilled photographer, wine lover, avid runner and great cook.

His former neighbour, Chris Cooper, said he was much more.

“He was just an all-around good guy. He was a great neighbour,” Cooper said.

“He would go for walks and runs by our house and he’d always make a point of saying ‘hi.’”

Landis was a member of Cooper’s exotic car group, 519 Drives. Landis had three cars of his own, two BMWs, one charcoal and one silver, and a peppy, bright-blue Ford Focus RS rally car. He was always out at group events and never went alone.

“He was quite a family man. He would always make sure his kids were involved. If he was at one of our meets, his kids were there with him,” Cooper said.

“He was a car friend and a good neighbour.”

A GoFundMe was launched Sunday to support the Landis family. After 12 hours, the crowdfunding page had raised $100 toward its $10,000 goal.

The family is involved with West London minor hockey. The organization is encouraging other hockey families to donate.
