McDonald’s celebrated the 50th anniversary of the golden arches being erected in Canada at the franchise’s oldest location in eastern Canada at 530 Oxford St. W. Tuesday.

At the celebration was Sandra Cox, likely one of the franchise’s most devout employees.

“I loved the (customers) and I loved the people that I worked with,” said Cox who was hired to work in the kitchen at the site’s first green-roofed rendition in October 1987.

George Cohon, founder of McDonald’s Canada, opened the Oxford Street West restaurant in 1968, a year after the franchise expanded north of the border to B.C. It was the second McDonald’s in Canada.

Today there are 17 McDonald’s in London and about 1,400 in Canada.

At Tuesday’s celebration, Cox wore a ring embroidered with the company’s M, given to her for 10 years of service. Around her neck was a necklace, given to her after 30 years at the restaurant. Around her wrist is a watch given to her by McDonald’s for her retirement. She said another watch given to her by McDonald’s was at home, in need of a new battery.

“You make a lot of friends here and they’re lifelong friends,” Cox said.

She worked in the original building until it was torn down in 2001 and the now-retro restaurant featuring golden arches was erected in its place. She trained employees and served customers at that McDonald’s until her retirement this year.

“It was a fun place to work and it still is. It’s a good opportunity for young people to come and work here and get a good work ethic. I loved working with them and I loved training them,” Cox said.

Both of Cox’s sons have worked at the Oxford Street West McDonald’s.

“Someday, I think my grandchildren will be here. I think it would be good experience for them,” she said.

Celebrations of the fast food giant’s 50 years in Canada continue today with hamburgers on sale for 67 cents from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at McDonald’s nationwide.
