Officials allegedly issued an arrest warrant for a model who walked through a small town in Saudi Arabia dressed wearing a skirt in defiance of the country’s strict dress laws.

The model named “Khulood” posted a video on her Snapchat account as she toured the heritage village of Ushaiqer dressed in a short skirt and black top.

Saudi authorities issued an order for the model’s arrest, according to the Okaz daily newspaper.

Her actions sparked outrage amongst some social media users with people calling for her to be arrested for breaking the country’s strict dress code for women.

Women in Saudi Arabia are expected to wear “conservative” and loose-fitting clothes, including a full-length cloak known as an abaya.

They are also expected to carry a scarf with them in case they are asked to cover the head by the country’s religious police, formally known as the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.

One person tweeted: “People who don’t respect the kingdom’s rules, don’t deserve to live in it.”

Another said: “What she did doesn’t fall under ‘personal freedom’. It’s clear that she wanted to provoke people and go against the country’s social rules and norms. She must be punished for this.”

Others offered their support and hailed her for challenging the country’s strict dress code.

“She’s freely walking around Ashaiqer, regardless of all the backlash, it’s still a beautiful idea,” a man tweeted.

Another said: “”Why all this fuss? You turned your eyes away from all the catastrophes in the world and the only thing that outraged you is a woman not wearing an abaya?”

Another tweeted: “She didn’t force anyone to follow her on Snapchat. Her account is also only directed at women. What’s the problem? Why call for an arrest warrant against her?”

The religious police also issued a statement on Twitter saying it had received reports of the video and was working with the relevant authorities.
