Melissa Klassen’s death is not considered suspicious and charges are unlikely to be laid says Sgt. Dave Rector, OPP.

The Springford girl, 6, died Monday after she was hit by a vehicle early that morning. On Wednesday Rector said the investigation was still in progress but it was unlikely the driver of the vehicle would face charges.

He also said it was a sensitive investigation.

“It’s kind of a delicate balance trying to protect the victims involved in this,” Rector said. “The truth is it happened on private property. The child was running beside the vehicle and the vehicle struck the child.”

Klassen was rushed to hospital shortly after the accident, where she was pronounced dead.

Her parents, Peter and Trudy Klassen, were unavailable for comment.

A visitation will take place for Klassen Thursday at the Ostrander Funeral Home in Tillsonburg. A funeral will be held Friday in the adjoining chapel.
