Homes have been evacuated after a major fire erupted at a disused sports club.

Dramatic video has emerged showing the thick plumes of smoke billowing from the building in Northfleet, Kent, after the blaze broke out on Wednesday evening.

Some 35 firefighters descended on the scene as people nearby were warned to keep their windows and doors closed, with the black smoke visible for miles around.

A number of homes close of the fire have been evacuated, Kent Fire and Rescue Service said.

The inferno broke out at Fleet Leisure and Sports Club at about 6.30pm. It is not currently known whether anybody has been injured.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: “KFRS crews are attending a fire in a derelict building in Nelson Road, Northfleet.

“Residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed as there is a large plume of smoke.”
