Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to descend on west London this afternoon for the main day of the 2017 Notting Hill Carnival.

But reaching west London could be difficult with a series of road closures, train and tube delays, and a bus strike.

The 3.5-mile long parade will shut down huge swathes of Notting Hill, Westbourne Park and Ladbroke Grove for the final day today.

Tube stations, including Notting Hill Gate, which serves the Central, Circle and District lines, will at times operate an exit only policy throughout the carnival – leaving revellers reliant on buses to get around.

The bus walkout began at 12.01am on Sunday and is expected to last until the end of today, Unite Union has said.

Westbourne Park Road, Elgin Crescent, Kensington Park Road, will all at one stage all be closed to make way for the carnival.

And TfL has warned traffic is likely move slowly in Edware Road, Holland Park and Notting Hill Gate areas.

The rail and road operator has also reminded customers that the Night Tube services do not run on Sunday and Monday nights.

It comes as fresh disruption was expected at Waterloo, Britain’s busiest railway station, where passengers were warned there is likely to be “many cancellations” over signalling problems.

Engineers were working to fix the problem, a points failure between Waterloo and Surbiton, affecting South Western Railway services on Monday morning.

A message on the National Rail website said: “Mainline trains that run through Surbiton are unable to access London Waterloo.

“These services will be heavily disrupted with many cancellations and we strongly advise that you check your journey before you travel.”

Passengers coming in from locations including Windsor, Reading and Shepperton have been advised to expect delays too.

Waterloo has been hit by chaotic scenes in recent weeks because of problems including signal and points failures, which affect the part of the track that can move, as well as a minor derailment.
