Doctors are being forced to ration tests for patients due to shortages caused by a supply chain failure a Roche, a major diagnostics company.

The chief executive of the NHS said he was only made aware of the issue yesterday.

A letter from East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust seen by Sky News told staff to “immediately reduce the number of tests”, including those used to monitor kidney and liver function.

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust also told clinicians to stop doing some tests.

The NHS hopes to resolve the issue by this weekend.
