More than half the transport trucks stopped for inspection during a safety sweep earlier this week were ordered off the road, police say.

Monday, police in St. Thomas and Aylmer worked with provincial Ministry of Transportation officials to stop 25 rigs south of London. And 13 of them were stopped from getting back into traffic due to safety concerns.

Police say they were looking for common safety lapses, including improper pre-trip inspections, load security, unsafe tires or brakes and expired annual inspections. All 13 trucks taken off the road required immediate repairs.

There were a total of 20 charges laid against drivers, and an additional 20 warnings issued by police. These kinds of joint sweeps will continue throughout the year and into 2018, police say.
