A police officer was taken to hospital after a “suspicious vehicle” crashed into a barrier near the White House in Washington.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene at about 1.30pm local time, with United States media reporting the vehicle struck a police car before it crashed into a barrier near the Library of Congress.
Numerous roads were closed while officers attended to the scene and people were warned to avoid the area.
Officers are understood to have carried out a controlled explosion at the car.
A statement from US Capitol Police said: “The US Capitol Police have cleared the suspicious vehicle located at Second Street and Independence Avenue.
“All test results were negative. However, the immediate area remains closed for further investigation.”

The Senate Press Gallery warned on Twitter that there would be “loud noise” while authorities deal with the suspicious car.

Police have said the incident is not terror related.
