The Government’s own website is extolling the vital importance of the European single market to business and prosperity — eight months after Theresa May said Britain will leave it.

Four Whitehall departments link to an official statement of Government policy that hails the EU trade bloc as a driver of “jobs and growth”.

They include the Foreign Office and International Trade department, which are headed by hard Brexit-backers Boris Johnson and Liam Fox.

The statement on gov.uk says: “The single market is key to Europe’s place in the global economy. It can drive growth and jobs.” Among advantages listed are ensuring “that businesses can operate cross-border in the same way they do at home”. And instead of withdrawal, the website urges reform to expand the single market into digital and other sectors.

Stella Creasy MP, a backer of anti-Brexit group Open Britain, said: “It seems the civil servants in charge of the Government’s own website are much more clued up about economics than many Cabinet ministers.

“They are quite right that the single market drives growth and jobs in Britain. Leaving the single market will put growth and jobs at risk. For the sake of everyone whose job is now under pressure, Boris Johnson and Liam Fox must change their position and support full membership of the single market for Britain in the future.”

In a speech in January, Mrs May attempted to rule out staying in after Brexit. She said: “I want to be clear: what I am proposing cannot mean membership of the single market. It would, to all intents and purposes, mean not leaving the EU at all.”
