Back-seat driving has been voted the most annoying thing a passenger in a car can do.

A survey by Vantage-leasing.com found that unwelcome advice from overbearing passengers grinds drivers’ gears more than anything else.

Over 1,000 drivers revealed what gets them gripping the steering wheel in the study, and 88 per cent of them mentioned back-seat drivers. 

Meanwhile, over three quarters of drivers don’t welcome hungry passengers – eating in the car was voted the second-most annoying habit by motorists.

1. Giving unwelcome driving advice – 88%


2. Eating in the car – 76%


3. Giving poor directions – 


4. Taking over the music – 71%


5. Taking over the temperature controls – 67%


6. Getting road rage on a driver’s behalf – 56%


7. Pretending to brake – 49%


8. Not contributing to petrol or parking costs – 45%


9. Littering or leaving rubbish in their car – 43%


10.Applying makeup – 33%

This was followed by passengers who made poor attempts at navigation. 

Other gripes included littering, passengers making their feelings about the driving clear by pretending to brake, and applying make-up in the car. 

Strangely, one in three of the survey’s participants admitting to being an irritating passenger themselves. 

Men are the self-confessed worst passengers, with 36 per cent guilty of annoying habits, compared to just 30 per cent of women.
