The UK’s five least-value rail trips are all routes to or from London, it has been revealed.

A new analysis by The Sunday Times found huge variations in rates for trips of similar length across the UK.

Some rail users paid five times as much per mile as others, the newspaper found.

It set a month of punctuality records on hundreds of lines against the prices charged to work out the value offered to rail passengers.

The five worst routes

Ipswich to Liverpool Street

71p per mile, 33.1% delayed or cancelled

Tunbridge Wells to Cannon Street

64p per mile, 29% delayed or cancelled

London Bridge to Sevenoaks

61p per mile, 36.1% delayed or cancelled

Paddington to Didcot Parkway

59p per mile, 60.2% delayed or cancelled

Liverpool Street to Witham

58p per mile, 38.3% delayed or cancelled

The most expensive journey was from Ipswich to London Liverpool Street at 71p per mile. A third of the trains from the town arrived late.

The worst value was the Great Western journey from Paddington to Didcot at 59p per mile with delays more than 60 per cent of the time.

The 20-mile trip from London Bridge to Sevenoaks cost 61p a mile — and was delayed or cancelled 36 per cent of the time.

One of the best-value trips in south-east England was from Grays, Essex to London Fenchurch Street. It cost 30p a mile and trains were only disrupted 15 per cent of the time.

Travel was nearly always cheaper and more punctual in the north of England and Scotland than around London, according to the analysis which looked at 360 journeys across the UK and punctuality records for the four weeks up to August 24.

Cat Hobbs of We Own It, a campaign group that wants railways to return to public ownership, told the newspaper: “Passengers are putting up with a wildly unfair postcode lottery on top of ever-rising rail fares. We need to scrap the mishmash of private operators and replace it with an integrated system.”
