Schoolchildren will be given resilience lessons to help them cope with modern life and “online stress”.

The new lesson plans for secondary school pupils will cover topics such as cyberbullying, social media and body image.

Public Health England (PHE) said they will help children build “crucial life-skills” and improve their mental health and wellbeing.

They will be rolled out to all secondary schools in England, and taught during Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) classes.

Teachers will screen YouTube videos from popular vloggers in a bid to encourage digital-obsessed teenagers to engage with educational topics.

School: Teenagers will also learn about coping with exam stress, and alcohol use under the plans (PA)

Pupils will learn also about bullying generally, as well as exam stress, relationships and alcohol use and smoking.

Professor John Newton, director of health improvement at PHE, said: “As natives of the social media world, young people have to navigate a minefield of challenges while enjoying the benefits of technology.”

“The new resources will help young people develop coping mechanisms and life skills to deal with diverse challenges, from cyberbullying and exam stress to body image, in a digital world.”

The Government has announced plans to make these classes mandatory in secondary schools and is currently consulting on the proposal.

Jenny Fox, PSHE Association subject specialist, said: “Young people today face a range of new pressures that can potentially harm their emotional and physical wellbeing.

She added: “The lesson plans provide opportunities for students to engage in active learning and to discuss and reflect upon the social and emotional aspects of issues they face on a daily basis.

“The lessons are consistently well-matched to the needs of young people and enable them to demonstrate progress as their understanding and skills develop.”
