Scores of small charities tackling poverty and inequality in London have been awarded grants in another bumper £1 million payout from the Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund.

Today’s bonanza arises from our partnership with Comic Relief. It is the sixth time the charity has allocated £1 million to the Dispossessed Fund.

It takes total grants distributed by our fund to £13 million in seven years, the most ever given out by a newspaper-led charity in the UK and marking the Standard as one of the UK’s biggest backers of community charities.

The figure excludes funds disbursed to survivors and next of kin as part of our Grenfell Tower appeal.

A total of 69 groups were awarded grants of £5,000 to £20,000 and were chosen for the transformative work they do to tackle gangs and knife crime, help  people get back into work or education, and address physical or mental disadvantage or other manifestations of social exclusion such as homelessness.

Liz Warner, the new chief executive of Comic Relief, said: “Comic Relief is proud to be supporting 69 projects helping vulnerable people who have been affected by gangs and knife crime, domestic violence, mental health issues, homelessness or educational disadvantage. This money will make a real difference.”

Our grants round was three times oversubscribed, with 217 applications whittled down to a shortlist of 99. The 69 winners were chosen in a meeting chaired by David Sulkin OBE and attended by representatives of the Standard, Comic Relief, charities and The London Community Foundation, which manages our fund.

The Dispossessed Fund has raised £18 million (excluding the Grenfell Tower appeal of £6.2 million) since 2010, of which £3.9 million is invested in an endowment. So far 1,186 grants have been awarded.@cohenstandard
