Thousands of furious passengers have complained of huge delays and dangerously overcrowded carriages on South West Trains.
A signalling problem and planned improvement works have sparked chaos on Saturday afternoon, with delays of up to an hour expected for the rest of the day.
Trains were unable to run between Feltham and Windsor and Eton Riverside and Feltham and Egham – the route on which the signalling problem occurred, Network Rail said.
Meanwhile trains on other routes have had to be diverted.
Many have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration.
I see Waterloo station is giving us a preview of the delays that will happen once they close platforms 👍

One Twitter user described “absolute chaos” adding people were “practically spilling” out of the train doors.
Absolute chaos on @SW_Trains #swtrains from Waterloo. Cancellations, trains rammed, people practically spilling out doors.

Another questioned whether the overcrowding in his carriage was safe.
Thanks for your reply, do you think this is safe? Surely if there are cancellations can’t more trains be put on to cover any them? pic.twitter.com/a9auQGl0RS

Only @SW_Trains manage to provide a service where it’s actually quicker to walk to your destination! 😡

Some complained of their day at Ascot being ruined.
Great day at @Ascot ruined by @SW_Trains. Signal issues now heading in the complete wrong direction to Reading. Not a happy customer
