A huge fire has broken out at Southend Airport after witnesses reported hearing an explosion.

Thick, black plumes of smoke could be seen billowing out of an airport hangar at the Essex airport on Wednesday morning, visible for miles around.

Six fire engines were on the scene battling to extinguish the fire, which started at around 10.30am.

There have not been any delayed flights at the airport as a result.

An Essex County Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters have been called to an incident this morning involving an aircraft hangar.

“When firefighters arrived at the scene they reported the large hangar was on fire. Six fire engines were requested to help tackle the fire.”

Witnesses claimed to have heard an “explosion” before the fire erupted.

Peter Gettings, 37, who was waiting to board a flight when he saw the fire, told Essex Live: “I spoke to airport staff and they said it was a fire at one of the hangers on the perimeter of the airport.

“I could see the flames from the terminal – they were not particularly high but it was really thick black smoke.”
