A booby trap in a vacant St. Thomas apartment was set off when a police officer forced open its front door Monday, sending butter knives flying at him.

Police say it was about 8 a.m. when a St. Thomas police officer forced open the barricaded door to the vacant Talbot Street home. The landlord, who was with police, believed the former tenant may be trespassing there.

By forcing open the door, the police officer triggered what St. Thomas police describe as a “booby trap” that “sent three knives flying” toward the officer. The butter knives struck the officer’s hand and chest, and he was unhurt.

The incident remains under investigation, police say.
