A dog that was discovered cowering on top of a car in a flooded street during Tropical Storm Harvey was rescued after heartbreaking footage of the stranded pet went viral.

A video of the stranded dog went viral on Monday when rescuers were forced to give up their attempts to save the pet as it barked and lashed out at the group

In the clip, which was shot by CBS reporter J.D. Miles, the dog can be seen cowering on the roof of the car as rescuers desperately try to lure him onto their boat.

The video of the original attempt to rescue the dog has been viewed more than 2.5 million times on Facebook.

CBS has since revealed the dog was eventually rescued when the group returned with beef jerky, which they used to lure the pet from the boat.

He has since been named Harvey after the storm.

Tropical Storm Harvey has devastated areas of Texas over the past few days, with 18 people confirmed as killed in resulting flooding.
