Aside from being the host of a hit game show, Alex Trebek can add matchmaker to his list of accomplishments.

Teachers Maryanne Lewell and Michael Townes got married on July 7 after they met while competing on Jeopardy’s annual “Teacher’s Tournament” four years ago, according to the New York Times.

While the two didn’t win the game, they hit it off while chatting in the green room and bonded over drinks after filming sessions.

Lewell, a high school teacher from Saint John, N.B., and Townes, a middle school teacher from South Carolina, stayed in touch through Facebook and text messages after filming had ended.

“She was always on my mind,” Townes told the Times. “Most of the things I texted her about were really just excuses to talk to her again.”

The feeling was mutual.

“The chemistry between us was so evident,” Lewell said.

While Trebek turned down an invitation to the wedding in St. Andrews, N.B., he offered his well wishes to the couple via email.

“My congratulations to the couple,” Trebek wrote. “Although Maryanne and Michael are not the first couple to have met at ‘Jeopardy’ and gone on to be married, they participated in one of our best Teachers Tournaments.”

“Even though neither won the competition,” he added, “they certainly are ‘Winners in Love.’”
