Henrik Stenson’s rental home was burgled as he played the first round of The Open in Merseyside.

The defending Open champion said valuable personal items and all of his clothing were taken in the burglary, and that fortunately his family were not in the home at the time.

The famous Claret Jug which he won at last year’s Open, was not stolen as it had already been returned to the golf club.

Merseyside Police has confirmed it is investigating the burglary in Formby.

Mr Stenson said: “”I am extremely grateful my family were not in the house.

“I am going to try not to let this spoil the week in any way.”

Despite the trauma of the burglary, the defending champion finished the day one under par, having teed off on Friday morning.
