More than 20,000 pulp-drenched revellers today hurled tomatoes at each other in Spain’s annual “Tomatina” street battle.

Ramped up security measures were visible ahead of the fiesta in Buñol, near Valencia, following the recent attacks in Barcelona and nearby Cambrils.

The food fight saw 160 tons of ripe tomatoes offloaded from trucks into crowds jamming the town’s streets for the hour-long battle.

Participants, including many tourists, donned swimming goggles to protect their eyes.

Organisers then hosed the streets down within minutes of the event’s end at noon, while participants made use of public showers.

The event, which costs about 10€ (£9) to attend, was inspired by a food fight between local children in 1945 in the tomato-producing region.
