A flamboyant Tory MP will see if he can find love by appearing on popular reality show Celebrity First Dates.

Prime Minister Theresa May revealed to bemused MPs during Prime Ministers Questions on Wednesday that Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant will appear on the Channel 4 programme for its new series.

The Tory backbencher, who has previously described himself as “not exclusively gay”, quizzed Mrs May on West Midlands’ bid to host the Commonwealth Games when the PM made the revelation.

But rather than giving a straight answer, the Prime Minister revealed the surprise news of her fellow Tory MP’s appearance on the show.

She said: “I have noticed that he is shortly to appear on a Channel 4 programme called Celebrity First Dates.

“What I’m not sure about is whether he is the celebrity or the first date.”

In the popular reality show, singletons are paired up for dinner at a central London restaurant and the date, as well as their reaction afterwards, is filmed.

The celebrity version of the show has in the past previously included television presenter Esther Rantzen, EastEnders actor Richard Blackwood and weather presenter Sian Lloyd.

Mr Fabricant, 67, instantly recognisable in Parliament for his unmistakable thatch of blond hair, was treated for prostate cancer last year.

The Lichfield MP was first elected in 1992 and has been a party whip as well as a former Tory vice chairman.
