The legacy of Boaty McBoatface will live on through the irreverent name of a new train in Scandinavia.

Swedish rail network MTR Express, which ran a competition to name its new engine, said it would give the public what it wants by calling it Trainy McTrainface.

An online poll found 49 per cent of respondents backed the name over alternatives Poseidon, Hakan and Miriam, which the rail firm said was “global revenge”.

The bold move comes after the hopes of many Britons were dashed when the UK‘s National Environment Research Council refused to honour a public poll to name a new boat last year.

Despite Boaty McBoatface winning the popular vote in a non-binding online call for suggestions, NERC instead christened its new research vessel the RRS Sir David Attenborough.

Trainy will join a new fleet of engines, including trains named Glenn, Ingvar and Estelle, due to run between Gothenburg and Stockholm from autumn.

MTR said the decision over the UK’s McBoatFace was a disappointment felt across the world.

The train company said it hoped the name Trainy would “be received with joy by many, not only in Sweden”.
