A former US Navy sailor has admitted to stabbing a woman 119 times after flying into a rage when she revealed she was transgender.

Dwanya Hickerson, 21, pleaded guilty to the horrific killing of Dee Whigham – a transgender woman – in a hotel room in Mississippi in July 2016.

The couple had been chatting online for a couple of months before they decided to meet in a Best Western hotel near his military base.

But after they had sex Ms Whigham – a hospital nurse – revealed she had been born a man and Hickerson “lost it”, launching a frenzied knife attack on his victim.

The court heard that an autopsy revealed 25-year-old Ms Whigham had been stabbed 119 times in the body and face while her throat was slashed three times.

Guilty: Dwayna Hickerson, 21, stabbed to death Dee Whigham in Mississippi last year (Jackson County Sheriff’s Department)

Hickerson, who had been training to become a weather forecaster, told police that he didn’t remember murdering her and said: “I lost. I lost it.”

Police revealed that CCTV showed the couple entering the hotel room together at about 8.30pm.

After the stabbing, Hickerson took a shower and was seen leaving alone 23 minutes after he arrived.

Ms Whigham’s body was found at about 9.45pm by her friends.

Following a police appeal, Hickerson’s instructor contacted authorities and he was arrested at Keeler Air Force Base.

Police discovered his bloody shirt and a 10-inch knife on the base.

Hickerson avoided capital punishment by pleading guilty to second-degree murder and was jailed for 40 years without parole.

He will also have to serve 15 years for a robbery after stealing his victim’s purse and mobile phone.

Ms Whigham’s mother, Vickie Blackney Whigham, slammed Hickerson’s sentence as a “slap in the face” and said: “He gets a chance to see his family and I don’t have that chance with my child.”
