Tributes were today paid to a British production designer who worked on tours for Kylie Minogue and movies including The Queen after he died during filming on the Mamma Mia! sequel.

Alan MacDonald was found by staff at a hotel, believed to be in Oxfordshire, where scenes for the musical movie are being filmed, according to The Sun.

Mr MacDonald rose to prominence in the London art scene of the Eighties by co-founding design studio Frick + Frack, initially based at the House of Beauty and Culture in Dalston.

In the 1990s, Mr MacDonald became involved in making the sets for music videos for the likes of Massive Attack and Culture Club.

He also designed the set for Kylie Minogue’s tours in 2002 and 2005/6. Mr MacDonald was best known for his work on The Queen, which won him best art direction in a contemporary film from the Art Directors Guild in 2006.

Other films he was involved included Philomena, starring Dame Judi Dench, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

A close friend today said people were “devastated” by the news.

Donald McInnes, a make-up artist who has know Mr MacDonald for 30 years, said: “I was working in a hair salon in Soho and Alan made the most amazing interior. It was beautiful with wood furniture and a mosaic floor.

“We all moved to music promos in the Nineties where he was the art director. And from there we were into film.

“I’ve known him as a friend since the early Nineties. Everyone is completely devastated.

“He was a beautiful, gentle and inspiring soul. He was a very private person but he was very kind. He was good fun with a great sense of humour. He was so talented. He deserved all he achieved.”

Filming for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! began last week and it is due to star Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Lily James and Colin Firth. It is due out in July next year.

Spokespeople for the movie and its studio Universal Pictures as well as Mr MacDonald’s agent were not available for comment.
