Boris Johnson’s election campaign has got off to a difficult start following the resignation of a cabinet minister. Alun Cairns announced he was standing down as Welsh secretary following claims that he lied about his knowledge of a Conservative party candidate’s involvement in what a judge called the “sabotage” of a rape trial.

Speaking to party members in the west Midlands on Wednesday evening the UK Prime Minister urged people to vote Conservative to “get Brexit done and unleash this country’s potential”.

Meanwhile, Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson is stepping down from his role and will not run as a Member of Parliament in the December election. He says he will continue to campaign for the party, and the decision was “personal, not political”.

Presented by Huw Edwards with reports by Laura Kuenssberg, Felicity Evans, John Pienaar, Iain Watson, Faisal Islam and Mark Easton.

Produced for the BBC News at Ten.
