The aftermath of Hurricane Gert is set to hit the UK bringing heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the country.

The storm, which is currently north of Bermuda in the Carribbean, is expected to cause blustery winds and torrential downpours in the north of England.

But the Met Office said the aftermath of the storm would also provide an “injection of warmth and moisture” bringing sunshine and balmy temperatures in the South.

Forecasters said the hurricane would travel across the Atlantic and hit the UK on Sunday.

It is the second hurricane of the season in the Atlantic Ocean.

Met Office forecaster Emma Sharples told the Standard Friday would see some patches of rain and that it would remain dry and bright throughout Saturday in London and the south-east.

“We will continue to have breezy, bright conditions into Saturday. It should stay about 20-21C,” she said.

“Then we’ll start to see the influence of what was Hurricane Gert. It will be a former shadow of itself. It will provide an injection of warmth and moisture from across the Atlantic.

“For the South, we may see a bit of patchy rain. It will be increasing in warmth across the South with temperatures in the low to mid 20s. Temperatures could reach up to 24C.

“Bright weather will come through on Monday in the South but there will be some quite heavy rain and strong winds in Northern parts. It will depend on the track that the system takes.”

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst added: “We are expecting the low pressure mainly to the north west of the UK, bringing stronger winds and outbreaks of rain – which could be heavy at times – across northern and western parts through the latter part of Sunday into Monday.”
