A disgruntled university professor posted a lengthy online rant after his entire class failed to show up in the first week of term.
Adrian Raftery, associate professor at Australia’s Deakin University, uploaded a photo of an empty lecture room 15 minutes after the class was due to start on LinkedIn.
He then shamed the no-show students in a tirade and explained he had been “pumped to give a great class” but left feeling “deflated that they couldn’t bother to show their a*** up”.
Professor Raftery added: “I don’t know about you but my generation always showed up for lectures and seminars, particularly at the start of semester.
“The subject I am teaching is Estate Planning – a mixture of law, superannuation, tax and financial planning – and would be one of the hardest they will encounter in their whole course.
“Students don’t realise that their lecturers could be their best advocates for getting a job.”
The professor asked followers what they would do “if they were in his shoes”.
One wrote: “Don’t show up for the next class or go but play on your phone and see what the reaction is.”
Others offered more practical advice with one user commenting: “I would email teasers to the students each day to pique their interest, then map out the best class you’ve ever facilitated to reel them in.”
