The US Capitol is on lockdown after a “suspicious vehicle” crashed into a barrier near the White House in Washington.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene at about 1.30pm local time, with US media reporting the vehicle struck a police car before it crashed into a barrier near the Library of Congress.
Numerous roads are closed while officers attend to the scene.
A statement from US Capitol Police said: “The U.S. Capitol Police are continuing to investigate a suspicious vehicle located at Second Street and Independence Avenue SE.”
It added: “All staff and other personnel are directed to avoid this area until further notice.”

The Senate Press Gallery warned on Twitter that there would be “loud noise” while authorities deal with the suspicious car.
