A US tourist in Germany was beaten up by a passer-by after he gave the Nazi salute, police said.

The 41-year-old American man was punched after performing the Nazi salute outside a café in the city of Dresden, in east Germany.

Police said he was “severely drunk” and suffered minor injuries after he was hit at about 8.15am local time on Saturday.

He is being investigated by Dresden police for violating Germany’s laws against the display of Nazi symbols or slogans, had an extremely high blood-alcohol level, police said.

His attacker fled the scene and is being sought for causing bodily harm.

It is the second time this month that tourists have got into trouble for giving the Nazi salute.

On August 5, two Chinese tourists were caught taking photos of themselves making the gesture in front of Berlin’s Reichstag building.
