Commuters are set to face another day of chaos at Waterloo after a train derailed amid improvement works on a major London transport line.

A South West Trains (SWT) service came off the tracks near Britain’s busiest station at 5.40am on Tuesday.

The derailment coupled with an unrelated signal failure left passengers facing carnage at the station during morning rush hour.

Now, National Rail has warned customers to expect delays and cancellations until the end of service on Wednesday.

Services are currently unable to use platforms 1 – 13 at the transport hub.

A statement posted on National Rail’s website read: “Most trains are experiencing severe delays and are subject to short notice alterations. Disruption to services is likely to persist until the end of service on August 16.

“Trains and stations are very busy. Queuing systems are in place at London Waterloo, Vauxhall, Clapham Junction, Wimbledon, Raynes Park, New Malden, Surbiton, Esher, Woking, Wandsworth Town and Putney to keep you safe and manage the number of customers on the platforms.”

The South West Train service crashed into a nearby freight train (PA)

Passengers took to social media to slam the “shambolic” queuing system.

Tom Attwood branded the system “ridiculous” while Declan O’Riodan wrote on Twitter: “Waterloo is a big mess this evening.”

Dramatic pictures emerged of the derailed train appearing to be leaning against a freight train near the station.

Fire fighters, paramedics and police officers rushed to the scene.

Three people were treated for minor injuries but were not taken to hospital.

The carnage comes amid £400 billion improvement works which are due to run until August 28 but there are fears any delays to the tight schedule will mean the massive project over-running and causing chaos in September when passengers return to work from their annual holiday
