Travel chaos for passengers travelling through Waterloo mainline station will continue on Wednesday evening as an ongoing track fault remains unfixed after it crippled services during the morning peak.

Commuters on all South West Trains (SWT) mainline services from the busy transport hub can expect delays of up to 45 minutes for the rest of the day, Network Rail has warned.

Hundreds of SWT services were cancelled or diverted during the morning’s rush hour after the rail company said it lost all signalling in the Earlsfield area on Monday.

While confirming the signalling issues had been fixed, engineers are still to fix a fault affecting a set of points in the Byfleet & New Haw area.

Customers have been told to expect further disruption on their journey home, but that the problem should be resolved overnight to prevent further disruption on Tuesday.

An emergency reduced service is operating in the area with trains cancelled and delayed, but a spokesman for Network Rail said it is “confident” it will be fixed before service begins tomorrow.

The morning’s problems were exacerbated for thousands more who tried to change onto London Underground at Wimbledon only to find the District line was suspended to Earl’s Court due to a separate signal failure.

There was also disruption on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines.

Train users took to social media to vent their outrage after the track problems affected the UK’s busiest train stations and lines that serve the capital’s busiest routes.

One wrote on Twitter: “A rotten journey into #Waterloo Station today. No a good start to the week!” with another branding the delays “pathetic.”

Disruption at the station came just a week before half of Waterloo shuts down for August to enable multi-million pound improvement work to take place.
