Kulsoom Nawaz, the wife of Pakistan‘s ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has been diagnosed with throat cancer.

The cancer was detected during a medical check-up in London last week.

Doctors treating the former PM’s wife said that the cancer can be treated and that her treatment will begin in a few days.

“Her cancer is treatable and we hope that she will recover soon enough, but it is likely that she won’t be around during the days leading up to the election,” a senior PML-N party member Mushahidullah Khan told BBC Urdu.

It comes after Kulsoom decided to stand for election to Parliament in her husband’s former seat in the September by-election.

The seat became vacant after Mr Sharif was forced to resign when the Supreme Court disqualified him from office over corruption charges last month. He denies wrong-doing.

Her daughter, Maryam, is now expected to run her mother’s political campaign while she undergoes treatment.

According to Pakistani media reports, Kulsoom had not been well for quite some time and she left for London unexpectedly on August 17 ahead of her scheduled appearance before the Election Commission.

She is expected to stay in London for her treatment and return to the campaign in its last week.
