Terrified witnesses ran for their lives and cowered on a beach in Cambrils as police opened fire on terrorists who launched a second attack in Spain.

Shocking footage posted on social media showed bystanders running towards a darkened beach as gunfire rang out across the holiday destination on Thursday night.

Police shot dead five attackers wearing suicide belts as they veered into tourists at the seaside resort injuring seven people, including a police officer.

One victim remains in a critical condition after being hit by the Audi A3, Catalonian police said.

The force’s bomb squad carried out controlled explosions on the suicide belts.

Markel Artabe, a 20-year-old restaurant worker, said he initially thought the gunshots were fireworks.

He told the Telegraph that he saw someone lying on the ground “with a gunshot in the head”.

The victim’s friends were crying out “help”, he added.

Joan Marc Serra Salinas, a 21-year-old waiter, described how he hid on the beach as shots rang out.

He told the newspaper: “And shouting. And more shouting. I jumped onto the beach and didn’t move,” he said.

The shoot-out came just hours after a white Ford Transit van rammed into crowds on Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

Thirteen people died and 100 people were injured in the atrocity, police said.

Detectives were working on the theory that the Cambrils and Barcelona attacks were connected, as well as an explosion at a house in Alcanar on Wednesday.

One person was killed in the blast and six were injured.

The body of a woman was discovered among rubble along with a man who was taken to hospital in a critical condition, police said.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the attack in Barcelona.

Police have launched a manhunt for a fourth man Driss Oukabir whose documents are believed to have been used to rent the van used the attack.
