A work experience student who won the hearts of Southern Rail customers after taking over the company’s Twitter account has been hailed with “saving the rail firm’s reputation”.

Eddie, 15, popped up on Southern’s official account yesterday writing: “Hi, Eddie here! Here on Work Experience and ready to answer your questions!”

Twitter seized on the opportunity to poke fun at the beleaguered rail operator and especially its efficiency record, though most remained kind to Eddie as he answered their unusual questions.

On Tuesday, staff posted a picture of the keen intern poised for another day at the keyboard, much to customers’ delight.

Twitter users asked the teenager’s opinions on topics from popular TV show Love Island to his “favourite lord”.

Rob Young asked: “Hi Eddie, who’s your favourite Lord? Lord of the Rings, Lord of the Flies, or Lord of the Dance? I look forward to your response.”

Eddie responded: “Lord of the Flies”.

He also revealed that his favourite chocolate bar is a Twix before turning his hand to career advice.

Ellie, a young intern at Compass News, wrote: “Hi Eddie, I am an intern in charge of a Twitter account and I’m trying to get the hang of it, any advice for me? ^Ellie.”

Social media’s favourite cheery youngster replied: “Hi Ellie! My advice is to be yourself and just to be positive! Good luck! ^Eddie.”

Two hours later Eddie said a final farewell to fans and posted a cheeky picture giving a thumbs up.

Followers praised the schoolboy and claimed he’d done more in two days “to recover Southern’s reputation” than the company had done in the past two years.

Others branded Eddie a “legend” and said he had made their day.

A tweet from Network Rail’s official account read: “#AskEddie Outstanding work, Eddie. We loved reading all of your answers! Wishing you all the best.”
